In today’s fast-paced world, first impressions tend to be the reality of many interactions, most certainly in a professional setting. And by minimizing a first impression into one still photo, getting a headshot taken can feel like an uphill battle that never ends.
But a headshot is more than just a photo. Many people see headshot sessions as a chore, but in the best scenario, they can be an insightful journey into understanding who you are.
The Power of Perspective
Stepping in front of the camera is more than posing; it’s about presenting a part of yourself to the world. The way you express yourself—through your posture, clothing, and even smile—can reveal a lot about how you see yourself.
For example, if you choose a sharp suit and stand tall, it might reflect your ambition and professionalism. In contrast, a relaxed sweater with a genuine smile could project warmth and approachability. A study found that 75% of employers say they make snap judgments about a candidate’s professionalism based on their photo alone. How can we better understand what we are physically putting out into the world, and how we want to better reflect the impression we are hoping to make?
Embracing Vulnerability
Being in front of a camera can often feel intimidating, putting your insecurities on display. Yet, this discomfort can be a pathway to growth.
During the session, you might find moments where you let go of self-doubt. Many clients start out stiff - feeling a weight, a pressure, looming over them. I love to talk throughout my sessions, asking clients questions that will allow the distance between the subject and the lens to feel smaller. By the end of the sessions, clients are almost always more playful, more goofy, not worrying so much about getting it "right" but feeling strong in themselves. This is a good lesson in vulnerability; Our own isms are our own strengths.
Reflection and Growth
Reviewing your headshots can be a powerful experience that helps you understand your self-perception versus how others may view you.
You might see images that evoke pride or surprise. Perhaps you recognize that you have been underestimating yourself. Perhaps certain angles make you smile, while others feel inauthentic to who you are. This kind of reflection often prompts personal growth and inspires action in areas of your life where you want to improve.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
A headshot session is so much more than just a photo opportunity; It can be a journey of self-discovery.
Think of the first time you ever heard your voice recorded, or did a self tape. I imagine you felt shame, embarrassed, uncomfortable having to see what other's don't think twice about. BUT - the more you hear yourself, and the more you put yourself on tape, not only does it become easier but you begin to see real shifts in the presence that you show up with. Being the subject of a photoshoot is no difference. Confidence comes from discomfort. And we all have to begin somewhere.
